Open house for new Davis winery on May 26

Open house for new Davis winery on May 26

Tazzina Bistro is featuring a new local winery from Davis called Sundstrom Hill and they want everyone to join them in their open house on May 26.

The event starts at noon and runs until 4 p.m.  There will be complimentary tastings, appetizers and live music.  And if you want to purchase some wine, you'll be able to get it for 10 percent off each bottle or 15 percent off a case.

Sundstrom Hill wines are made to emphasize quality and value. Each wine is produced in a manner that is designed to highlight the quality of the excellent fruit that we source. Great detail is paid to monitoring the development of the wine with the intention of permitting each vintage to express itself with its uniqueness. As a result, lots are small and distribution and availability are limited.

Chip and Lynne founded the winery in 2008, after Chip attended a seminar on wine making.

UC Davis West Village a global model for sustainable urban planning

UC Davis West Village overcame funding constraints, delays, regulatory changes, a housing market collapse and other challenges to become the nation’s largest planned zero-net energy community, according to a new report on sustainable, low-carbon developments.

The pioneering development is one of four case studies featured in the current issue of the journal Planning Theory & Practice.

The report, “Exploring the Challenges of Environmental Planning and Green Design: Cases from Europe and the USA,” highlights UC Davis West Village as a model for new town construction and an example of how progressive planning and creative partnering can lead to new possibilities in energy conservation.

The UC Davis case study was selected from among several international green design projects submitted for inclusion in the report. ... Read More

When, where and how wood is used impact carbon emissions from deforestation

When, where and how wood is used impact carbon emissions from deforestation

A new study from the University of California, Davis, provides a deeper understanding of the complex global impacts of deforestation on greenhouse gas emissions.

The study, published May 13 in the advance online edition of the journal Nature Climate Change, reports that the volume of greenhouse gas released when a forest is cleared depends on how the trees will be used and in which part of the world the trees are grown.

When trees are felled to create solid wood products, such as lumber for housing, that wood retains much of its carbon for decades, the researchers found. In contrast, when wood is used for bioenergy or turned into pulp for paper, nearly all of its carbon is released into the atmosphere. Carbon is a major contributor to greenhouse gases...... Read More
